It began with the Lich King's plague half a dozen years ago. All humans who fell to this plague became mindless undead zombies, bound to the Lich King's will. Around four years ago, however, the banshee Sylvanas Windrunner rebelled against the Lich King and won the ruins of Lordaeron and the Tirisfal Glades for her own free-minded undead allies, who named themselves the Forsaken.
In order to become Forsaken, one must first be born human, then die from the Lich King's plague, then somehow break free from his control and swear allegiance to the Dark Lady, Sylvanas Windrunner. The Forsaken vary in the clarity of their recollection of their human lives, and their attachments to said lives, but they all have one thing in common: they are walking corpses, animated by dark demonic magic rather than the benevolent life-giving forces of nature. As such, the Forsaken do not grow, reproduce (except by spreading the Plague), or experience the nobler and more spiritual emotions. As a race, they fight a war on two fronts: against the Lich King's armies (the Scourge) on one hand, and against the living races of the Alliance on the other, races who seek to extinguish all Undead. The only reason the Forsaken ally with the Horde is because they do not wish to fight a war on three fronts. Eventually, the Forsaken hope to wipe out all living races so they can at last walk free and unchallenged over Azeroth.

Generic Backstory: You dimly remember inhabiting the city of Lordaeron - now and then you have a flash of an image of gleaming white marble and bustling, noisy crowds. You had parents and siblings whose personalities and social status you vaguely recall, but you have forgotten their names, though you do remember your own first and last name. Most everything else is a blur until the moment you awoke in Deathknell, where agents of the Dark Lady had squirreled you away in a crypt, waiting to see if their experiment in attempting to Awaken you would succeed. It did succeed, and you are now free of the control of the Lich King, with no memory of what you did while in his thrall. Your new life is rather overwhelming. On the one hand, you have immortality and the chance to gain almost limitless power. On the second hand, only other Forsaken can truly be trusted, and the rest of the world would very much like to see you put back in the grave you so painstakingly dragged yourself out of.
