Identifiable by the totems he conjures and his reverence for nature's elements, the shaman is the spiritual heart of the Horde. From the dawn of time, the naturalistic tribal races of Azeroth have had shaman-like figures, but with the recent reformation of the Orcish Horde around shamanistic principles, the training of Horde shamans has become uniform and organized to match the Orcish philosophy. Of all the callings in Azeroth, the path of the shaman is the most resistant to specialization, remaining a fascinating blend of healer, spellcaster, and melee opponent even at the highest pinnacle of power.
Where mages often strive to master control over the elemental forces, the shamans prefer to work with the spirits of the elements, and many of their spells often are granted because of the shaman's humility and the element's whims. Their reverence of the elemental world and strong sense of balance lead many to believe that the shamans are in league with the druids and the Cenarion Circle. Although their interests may be similar, both take decidedly different approaches in ensuring the world remains balanced. Shamans are only found among the Horde races of Orc, Troll and Tauren.
In a group, shamans often work as a supporting role. Although they are capable healers, priests and some druids are better with the healing arts. Shamans truly shine with their totems, which can affect small areas, either providing a benefit for the shaman's close allies or hampering several of the shaman's close enemies. When several shamans begin to weave their elemental totems together, they truly become a fearsome force.
In a group or by themselves, shamans are difficult to defeat. In addition to their powerful totems, they are capable of using shields and, with enough skill, mail armor. They also have the ability to learn a variety of weapons. It is for this reason that shamans are the class most universally feared and hated by the soldiers of the Alliance.
Shamans may use cloth and leather armors, as well as shields. At higher levels, they become strong enough to wear mail armor. As for weapons, shamans' strict naturalism prevents them from using swords, wands, polearms, or ranged weapons, but anything else is permitted. When searching for magical equipment, shamans tend to prefer Stamina and Intellect, followed closely by Spirit. Those shamans who prefer melee combat may seek items that enhance their strength.
