Nobody trusts them, but everybody needs them: rogues. All over the world of Azeroth, clandestine organizations seek out their races' most physically an morally flexible youth so that they might whisk them away from their humdrum everyday lives and train them in the arts of subterfuge, stealth, quickness and cunning. Many use the euphemism "scout," as that is a small part of the rogue's job. No one likes to talk about the dirtier jobs rogues are given to do - assassinations, espionage, and cheap trickery - but everybody uses them. Of all the races on Azeroth, only the Tauren do not train rogues.

Expected Role

Rogues can do whatever they like, of course, but it's nice to know what your group will be expecting! Your expected role is often referred to in military slang as "dps," or "damage per second." In other words, you excel at hurting people badly, and quickly, all without getting in the way of their blades any more than you absolutely must.

However, a rogue's job is more than just putting the hurt on. With their ability to sneak unseen, rogues make excellent scouts in dungeons, and can also start off battles by sneaking up on and "sapping" or knocking out the most potentially dangerous or disruptive foe. By the time the foe wakes up, his allies with any luck will already be dead! Once a rogue has a bit of experience, he can also distract his enemies to make sneaking by them easier, or completely vanish before his enemies' eyes with the aid of flash powder! These abilities help the solo rogue perform admirably, but can also be extremely useful in group situations where the enemies' attention needs to be directed back toward the party's mail- or plate-wearing member(s). Be quick and be clever, and you'll live long despite your lighter armor.

Equipment

Rogues tend to travel light, but there are a few essentials that bear mentioning. If you take a more "sneak and ambush" approach to combat, look for daggers - opt for swords if you wish to face your enemy in protracted battles. In either case, weapon speed takes a back seat to raw damage, as you can perform many moves instantly no matter how heavy your weapon! Meanwhile armor and trinkets that increase your Agility magically are a must-have. Stamina would be a second priority, as it increases survivability. If you plan to group often with people who are good at keeping the heat off you, you may wish to prioritize Strength enhancements instead. When shopping at the Auction House, look for items marked with the brand of the Monkey (Agility and Stamina) or Tiger (Agility and Strength).
