Many races on Azeroth have faith in a higher power - be it the goddess Elune, the principles of the Holy Light, or the dark power of trollish voodoo. The Priest class has arisen to serve as a mediator between the higher powers and those who believe in them. Blessed by an uncommonly strong faith, the Priest's inner certitude allows him to perform feats unrivalled by any other calling: powerful healing, protective spells, even mind control. The Priest often believes that his powers come directly from the object of his worship - but evidence suggests the real source of his power comes from within.
Priests can do whatever they like, of course, but it's nice to know what your group will be expecting! Your expected role is... to keep your friends alive. Glamorous or not, no one can do this job as well as you can, and very few people are patient and modest enough to pursue this calling. A good priest is so hard to find that you will become immensely popular when your reputation begins to spread!
The Priest has a number of tricks up his sleeve in addition to the often-used healing spells. To start with, he has several healing options, which vary in mana cost, casting time, and effectiveness. You will also learn a number of spells that will help protect yourself and your allies, preferably without drawing too much attention to yourself, as you are quite possibly the most fragile class in Azeroth! Luckily, you can also "Fade" from an enemy's sight or frighten him away if needed. As a priest, unless you opt for the higher-damage Shadow specialty, your solo adventuring options are rather limited. If you are patient and clever, though, even as a Holy priest you can learn tricks to get around your handicaps when alone. Just remember that a priest who thinks he is a mage or warrior will not be long for this world.
A priest's armor rating and physical weapon damage are of virtually no importance, since ideally priests will not fall under melee attack, and have several tricks to help keep this from happening. As a priest, you should seek out enchanted robes, jewelry, trinkets and ornamental weaponry that will enhance your Intellect (to increase your mana pool) and Spirit (to increase the rate at which your mana regenerates). Staves are more likely to have Intellect and Spirit bonuses than maces or daggers. As a last resort, Stamina enchantments can help you survive if an enemy should manage to hack his way through your magical shield. Look for items marked with the sign of the Owl (Intellect and Spirit), Eagle (Intellect and Stamina), or Whale (Spirit and Stamina)
