Steadfast defenders of the environment, druids have a keen sense of the balance of nature. Their sensitivity to the natural world is so strong, most druids even gain the ability to alter their forms to one or more of the beasts that live in the world.
Both the night elves and the tauren were taught the art of druidism from Cenarius, more than 10,000 years ago. However, the powers of the druid were lost to the tauren until recently. Because of the friendship formed during the war against the Burning Legion between the Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage and the Tauren Hamuul Runetotem, Tauren druids have returned to Azeroth.
The druids are members of the Cenarion Circle, based out of the Moonglade, and view the delicate balance of nature as much more important than the tensions between the Alliance and the Horde. Although it may startle some to see the Kaldorei and the Tauren to interact with each other on seeming equal terms in the Nighthaven, the druids put aside the rivalries between their races for the sake of what they deem to be a greater good.
Expected Role
Druids are extremely versatile, and can fill in for nearly any of the "key" roles in any group. They have a broad range of healing spells, including spells to cure poisons and raise the dead. In bear form, they generate Rage and have several tools to gain the attention of their opponents, and are second only to warriors in their ability to take punishment and attract attention. In cat form, they can slip into the shadows, maul enemies from behind, and even use their keen noses to determine the location of humanoids. Although they may not be the equivalent to warriors or rogues, they make an excellent secondary option, and their versatility allows them to fill in should one of the other positions become unexpectedly absent.
Equipment
One of the druid's drawbacks is in deciding what would be the best equipment to use. Since they are capable of doing so many things, there is very little a druid can't use. Druids who expect to be involved may prefer equipment that provides strength (for extra damage in cat and bear forms), stamina (more hit points) and agility (more damage in cat form, higher armor class). Druids who expect to be primarily casting spells will want intelligence (more mana) and spirit (hit point and mana regeneration). For druids, equipment that provides several smaller stat bonuses tends to be desired more than equipment that only provides one or two big boosts.
Specialties
- Balance - Many druids have a special sensitivity to the natural order, and are capable of defending nature by calling upon nature to punish the offenders. Those specialized in balance seem especially capable of doing this, their spells even more violent or longer in duration. The most ardent supporters of balance may even be rewarded with a new beastly form; that of a moonkin. In addition to a thicker hide than the druid's normal form, it also allows some limited spellcasting ability.
- Feral Combat - Some druids prefer exploring the world of animals from the perspective of the animals, and many even prefer the shape, and company, of the creatures in the natural world. There are tales of some night elves who forget about their elven forms for years on end. Many druids who prefer their animal forms often find these stronger and swifter than their natural forms, and may even develop abilities other creatures lack. Indeed, it is often said that the combat abilities of a feral druid in bear form are second only to those of well-trained warriors.
- Restoration - Many druids seek to heal the damage that has been done to the natural world and those that live upon it. They are adept at accelerating the natural healing process, even to the point where recovery is nearly instantaneous. Those who specialize in restoration are often considered to be as skilled in healing as most priests.
Miscellaneous Culture Notes
- Night Elf druids have a bond with the Emerald Dream, and have been known to meditate upon that plane for up to a thousand years. However, something has happened in the Emerald Dream recently, and the disruption is something that every druid has felt. Malfurion Stormrage, the greatest Archdruid who ever lived, is still trapped within the Emerald Dream, his soul missing from his still-slumbering body.
- Among Night Elves, the path of the druid has traditionally been open to males. However, recently females also have been allowed to begin their education as druids. Tauren do not seem to have this same gender discrimination, and male and female druids are in approximately equal numbers among their kind.
- As part of their training, all druids gain a spell that allows them to travel instantly to the isolated Moonglade. Although difficult to travel to over land, once a year the druids of the Moonglade open passages through portals of moonlight so all may celebrate the Lunar Festival.
- There are three known factions of druids, each which specialize in different animal forms. The Druids of the Claw adopts mammalian forms, such as bears and leopards, and is the faction of which player characters become. The Druids of the Talon are reportedly capable of transforming into birdlike forms, but the greater majority of these druids remain in the Emerald Dream, and the only known dens are atop Stonetalon Peak and Teldrassil. The Druids of the Fang are capable of transforming themselves into great snakes; however, based on their emergence and activities in the area known as the Wailing Cavern, they may have been lost to the corruption in the Emerald Dream, and cannot be trusted.
